Louis Schatz

Louis Schatz, 92, Bergen, passed away Thursday, May 29, 2014, at Souris Valley Care Center in Velva.

Louis J. Schatz was born May 18, 1922, the son of John and Agatha (Pfau) Schatz, in rural Karlsruhe. He was raised on the farm and educated at a country school in rural Balfour until the eighth grade. As a young adult, Louis went to work for his uncle, as a farmer and trucker for a few years before joining the Civilian Conservation Corps. He worked in the Upham area as well as at the Itasca State Park in Minnesota.

Louis married Catherine Gloria “Katie” Heit April 14, 1942, in Karlsruhe. They made their home on a farm in the Balfour area for several years. They then made their home in Fessenden and later in New Rockford for a time, before moving to a farm located in Odin Township of McHenry County, south of Bergen, where they farmed, raising small grains and livestock. They continued to farm there until retiring in the 1990s. Katie passed away Aug. 14, 2013.

He was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Balfour, and later was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Velva.

In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing and hunting but farming was his life.

Surviving family includes: son, Larry (Dorathy) Schatz, Bergen; daughter, Sharella “Sam” Schatz, Minot; grandchildren, Tammy Duchsherer (Robert Lemer), Alesha (Karl) Keller, Matt (Tammi) Schatz, Nicole (Steve) Angerhofer, and Josh Schatz; 11 great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; brothers, Chris Schatz, Minot, Raymond Schatz, Yakima, Wash., and Adam Schatz, Yakima, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 71 years, Katie; infant son, Jerome; and sisters, Agnes, Irene, Betty and Jo.

Mass of Christian Burial: Monday, June 2, 2014, at 10 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva.

Interment: Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Velva.

Visitation: Today (Sunday) from 4 to 5 p.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva.

Vigil Prayer Service: Today at 5 p.m. at the church.

Memorials: are preferred to Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Velva.
