Dorothy Jensrud

Dorothy L. Jensrud “Tootie,” 89, Plaza, died Thursday, May 29, 2014, in a Minot nursing home.

Dorothy was born July 20, 1924, to Ernest and Fern (Camp) Thompson in Eagle Bend, Minn. The family later moved to Esmond, where she graduated from high school in 1942.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Melvin Jensrud Nov. 28, 1942, in Reno, Nev., before they moved to Richmond, Calif. Dorothy worked as a stenographer, and Melvin as a welder, in the shipyards. In 1943 they moved back to Esmond when Melvin was drafted into the Navy.

In December of 1946, they moved and made Plaza their home. Dorothy was a homemaker and was very active in her children’s lives, serving as a room mother and school chaperone. She also worked as a bookkeeper at Farmers Union Oil for 15 years. Around 1977, Melvin and Dorothy moved to Lisbon and then on to Devils Lake, where Melvin managed the oil companies, before returning to Plaza in the late 1980s.

She was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid of Plaza. She taught Sunday school and was a Bible study leader. She was also instrumental in starting a quilting group at the church. Dorothy was named “Outstanding Woman of Plaza in 1994.” Dorothy helped implement a successful Meals-on-Wheels program in Plaza. She was also a member of the homemakers group, the Plaza Senior Citizens and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Throughout her life, Dorothy gave piano lessons and was the church organist. She also enjoyed singing in the church choir and for various community events. She passed her love of music on to her children and grandchildren. She cherished spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. May God bless the memory of Dorothy “Tootie” Jensrud.
