Hedvig Overton

Hedvig Overton, 93, Kenmare, died Wednesday, June 4, 2014, in a Kenmare hospital.

Hedvig Anna Martha Petermann was born Nov. 9, 1920, a daughter of Fred and Anna (Mau) Petermann in Stettin, Germany. She moved with her family in the fall of 1923 to the United States of America, coming aboard the Melita ship. The family settled in Rockford Township, where Hedvig attended grade school at Rockford Township, two years of high school at Tolley, and graduated in 1940 from Kenmare High School. Following her graduation, Hedvig moved to Chicago where she worked as a nanny for the president of the American Medical Association.

Hedvig was united in marriage to Paul M. Overton on Nov. 30, 1941, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Tolley. They made their home in Stafford Township, where they farmed and raised their two sons, Jerry and Dennis. They retired in 1983. In 2000, the couple moved to Mapleview in Kenmare. The couple was married for 62 years when Paul passed away Feb. 21, 2003.

Hedvig was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, of Kenmare. She enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking, working in her yard, and was very proud of her peonies and of the thousands of evergreen trees the family planted over the years. In 1976, Hedvig was able to return to Germany and reunite with her godmother, Martha Petermann, and several cousins.

Hedvig is survived by: sons: Jerry (Nancy) Overton, and Dennis (Alvina) Overton, all of Kenmare; four grandchildren, Brian (Lori) Overton, Fergus Falls, Minn., Jason (Jodie) Overton, Minot, Blenda (Jerome) Dahlin, Minot, and Denton (Stacey) Overton, Kenmare; nine great-grandchildren, Chris, Sarah, Samuel, Noelle, Dillan, Dustin, Devon, Sierra and Taden; in-laws: Ruth Nelson, Eatonville, Wash., L.L. (Mabel) Zink, Salem, Ind.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Hedvig was preceded in death by: her parents and husband.

Funeral Service: Monday, June 9, 10:30 a.m., at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare.

Graveside Service: Monday, June 9, 1 p.m., at Rosehill Cemetery, rural Norma.

Visitation: Will be Monday, June 9, one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorials may be made in Hedvig’s memory to the Rosehill Cemetery in Norma.
