Area boys attend Boys State event
The following students from the area attended North Dakota Boys State at Wahpeton last week: Cole Willette, Alamo; Waylon DeCoteau and Tristan DeCoteau, both Belcourt; Aaron Kabanuk, Burlington; Dalton Weeks, Grenora; Lathan Smith, Mandaree; Ryan Bent, Tanner Kadlec, Liam Thrailkill, Roman Frias and Justin Kovich, all Minot; Hunter Andes, Plaza; Jake Hanson, Austin Keller, Jared Mitzel and Ethan Schwalk, all Turtle Lake; and James Wahus, Watford City,
Schwalk was elected Lieutenant Governor, Frias was elected Secretary of State, Bent was elected representative, Thrailkill was elected senate minority whip and Kovich was elected senator during the weeklong event, which teaches high school juniors about civics and government. The event is sponsored by the American Legion.
At North Dakota Boys State, delegates participate in hands-on learning activities including city and county government functions, disaster simulation exercises and the publication of a daily newspaper that is written and edited by delegates. In addition to this “learning by doing” process, delegates have the opportunity to experience speeches and debates from visiting dignitaries.
