Devils Lake duo claims tourney title
DEVILS LAKE – Not even a day of fishing in the rain could prevent a pair of Devils Lake men from capturing the crown in the annual Devils Lake Chamber Fishing Tournament, held June 27-28 at Six Mile Bay. The second day was completed despite inclement weather.
Jeff Trana and Rick Darling weighed in a two-day catch of walleyes totaling 45.84 pounds. Second place went to Chad Haberstroh of Sarles and Mike Anderson of Devils Lake with 44.87 pounds. Third went to the team of Brian Morlock of Sykeston and Ken Omlie of Lankin, with 40.95 pounds of walleye.
Eighty-two teams competed for the $5,000 top prize. The event paid through the top 13 places. Teams in 14th to 16th places received prizes donated by Berkeley Fishing. New to the tournament this year was an optional “northern pike shootout,” into which 39 teams entered. First-place money in the pike shootout was $975. The winners were Robert and Michael Remmick of Devils Lake with 15.32 pounds. The Remmicks also finished 16th in the walleye tournament.
Tournament director Johnnie Candle called the tournament one of the best he’s seen in North Dakota.
“I feel that this year’s tournament was the best one we produced since I’ve been involved,” Candle said. “The volunteers are incredible, the facility is awesome, the fishery is one of the best in the country and that anglers are some of the best in the state.”
