Garages burn in NW Minot

Fire destroyed garages rented by the Minot-based Investor’s Management and Marketing just north of the Skyport Apartments at the corner of the 21st Avenue and Fifth Street Northwest in the 2100 block.

An eyewitness on the scene Thurdsay at about 7 p.m. said she arrived there while three of the seven units were engulfed in flames. Although she did not see them first catch, she believed that the fire began in the second or third unit when looking east at the units, which is supported by the fact that a huge hole had burned through the top of the units before the wall fell. As she stood there, the fire engulfed a total of five units with the remaining two units also affected heavily by fire and smoke damage.

Another eyewitness rents a corner garage in the row across from and south of the row of units that burned said that he lived in the Skyport Apartments and came out because he was worried his unit, and the expensive Jeep inside, had caught fire. By 7:50 p.m. that row of units remained unaffected.

The Minot Fire Department was still at the scene and additional units were called back to the scene by around 8 p.m.

The official cause of the fire is not known at this time although several people watching the scene said they heard someone was working on a motorcycle in one of the units before it sparked and “exploded.”
