Micheal Jay “Mike” Berg, 72, lifelong Minot resident, former owner of B & B Drug and longtime Minot civic leader, died on Friday, July 11, 2014, in his home following a 19-year battle with prostate cancer.
Mike was born on Feb. 6, 1942, in Minot to Reinhold J. “Mike” and Jean (Swinton) Berg. He was reared in Minot, graduated from Minot High School in 1960 and graduated from North Dakota State University in 1965 with a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy. He was a member of the Kappa Psi Fraternity at NDSU.
Mike married Janet Bunker on July 25, 1964, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minot. Following Mike’s graduation from NDSU they made their home in Minot where Mike was employed at B & B Drug, a drug store established by his father in 1942. He became the owner and operator of B & B Drug in 1970 and continued in that capacity until he sold the pharmacy in 1996 due to his cancer diagnosis.
Long active in the Minot community and a man with endless energy, Mike was especially active in Rotary International, First Presbyterian Church, Minot Area Chamber of Commerce (Board of Directors), Downtown Merchants and Professional Association (president and Board of Directors), Salvation Army (Board of Directors) and American Red Cross (Board of Directors). As a member of Minot Rotary he was a Paul Harris Fellow, president, member of the Board of Directors, Scholarship Committee Board of Directors and was the District Man of the Year for his international service with the Rotary Flying Doctors and his many mission trips to Honduras as well as his involvement in numerous local club committees. Spiritually, he was a member of the Board of Elders, Trustees and Ushers as well as numerous committees at First Presbyterian Church – Minot. Civically, he was active in the Minot State University Foundation (Board of Directors), SCORE (Board of Directors), United Way (Board of Directors), Park and Shop Committee (president and Board of Directors), Minot Parking Authority (president and Board of Directors), YMCA (Childcare and Building Committees) and N.D. Human Services Advisory Committee. Professionally, he was a member of the N.D. Pharmaceutical Association (president – District 2) and the N.D. Retail Association (president and Board of Directors). He was proud to have been listed on the Honor Roll of Outstanding Drug Store Retailers in the Independent Super Store category.
When Mike had a little free time he enjoyed photography, pontoon rides and boating around Lake Metigoshe in his antique speed boat, deer hunting, fishing and walking. He was proud to be mechanically inclined and computer literate.
Mike’s loving family includes his wife of 50 years Janet; children, Paul (Stephanie) of Bloomington, Minn., Mark (Emily) of Polk City, Iowa, Michelle (Robert) Schutt of Minot; grandchildren, Adam and Ashley Schutt, Devan Berg and Hayden and William Berg; sister, Marian Culbertson and her significant other Don Tourangeau as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jerry Berg.
Visitation: Tuesday from 2 to 6 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home – Minot.
Celebration of the Life of Mike Berg: Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at 11 a.m. in First Presbyterian Church – Minot.
Interment will be in Rosehill Memorial Park – Minot.
