George Solar

MOHALL George Edward Solar, 90, Minot, formerly of Mohall, died Friday, July 11, 2014, at a Minot hospital.

George was born May 20, 1924, in Kenmare, to Mike and Marie (Simpson) Solar. He was raised in North Dakota; and in 1928, the family moved to Montana. The family returned to North Dakota his junior year of high school and he graduated from Mohall High School in 1942.

He farmed with his father until being drafted in the U.S. Navy in 1945. He served as a Signalman 3rd Class aboard destroyer escort ships in both the Atlantic and Pacific. He was honorably discharged in July of 1946 and returned to the Mohall area and continued farming.

George married Mary Jane Yearicks on Nov. 3, 1949, in Rio Grande, N.J. They lived on the farm until moving into Mohall in 1961. He farmed a total of 13 quarters prior to retiring in 1983. Jane died July 31, 2006. He moved to The Wellington in Minot in 2010.

George was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall, and the George T. Taylor American Legion Post #52, Mohall. He loved sports, especially baseball.

Family: sons, Jim (Carmen) Solar, Bellingham, Wash., and Bob (Penny) Solar, Minot; grandchildren, Kirk (Kacie) Solar, Jennifer Solar and Betsy Solar; and Katy, Chris and Adam Solar; great-granddaughter, Ellie Solar; siblings, Martha Smith and Alma (Russell) Zurkan, all of Federal Way, Wash., Bill Solar, Minneapolis, Minn., Janet Lybeck, Auburn, Wash., Helen (Gary) Bowman, Riverside, Calif., and Hazel Stenberg, Auburn, Wash.; sister-in-law, Ruth Solar, Mohall; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

George was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael Earl Solar; wife, Jane; granddaughter, Amy Marie Solar; and siblings, Lawrence and Carl Solar.

Funeral: Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at 2 p.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall.

Burial: Mohall Community Cemetery, Mohall.

Visitation: Tuesday, 10 a.m. until the service time, at the church.
