‘The fox guarding the hen house’
No reasonable person can doubt some Internal Revenue Service officials abused their power in harassing conservative organizations. But it is unlikely anything ever will be done to punish them.
That is because the situation involves the Washington version of a fox guarding the hen house.
Some members of the House of Representatives want to put pressure on former IRS official Lois Lerner to provide more information about the scandal. To that end, they would like to ask a court to hold her in contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate.
But as U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., has pointed out, that may never happen. It seems such action would have to involve U.S. Department of Justice attorneys – and the agency is taking no action on the matter.
Of course not. Both the IRS and the Department of Justice are run by cronies of President Barack Obama.
That also is why IRS officials who engaged in illegal action probably can be smug about their prospects. It also is unlikely the Justice Department will take action against them.
So it goes in a federal government that has, for all intents and purposes, become answerable only to Obama.
