Ottilia “Tillie” Wentz, 95, was called home to the house of the Lord on Sunday, July 20, 2014, in Minot.
Tillie was born Feb. 5, 1919, in Drake, to Henry and Josephine (Zeigler) Lemer. She was raised on the family farm in McHenry County, near Drake.
She was united in marriage to Pius Wentz on Nov. 20, 1939, in Orrin. Pius and Tillie operated their farmstead in Pierce County until 1959. They moved to Balta and lived there for a short period of time before moving to Orrin where they owned and operated the grocery store. In 1962 they moved to Minot where Tillie was employed at Sweetheart Bakery for 20 years. She retired in 1983. They moved from their home of 30 years to a condo on North Hill where Tillie resided after Pius’ death in 1998. She later moved to Edgewood Vista in 2006, then to Trinity Nursing Home in 2010
Tillie was very devout in her faith to the Catholic religion. Tillie and Pius were members of Little Flower Catholic Church for their life journey in Minot. She was caregiver for several years to her father-in-law, Valentine Wentz, until his passing in 1957. She also raised her grandson, Kevin Sanders.
Tillie was the “glue” for her family. Their home was the centerpiece of all holiday gatherings for 30-plus years. She made Christmas gatherings extra special. Tillie was an amazing cook coming from a German-Russian heritage. Her specialties were kuchen, canned pickles, beets, tomatoes, chokecherry jelly and chokecherry wine divine. Tillie was an avid and amazing gardener. Her backyard garden and flowers will be forever be embellished in our memories. There was nothing “Tillie the Tool Time” couldn’t fix. She had her little workshop in her basement and you were not allowed to mess with her tools.
