Lu was born Nov. 6, 1926, in rural Ward County, the daughter of Milliard and Jane Barr. She attended rural grade schools and graduated from Tolley High School. She attended St. Joseph School of Nursing in Minot. Lu met the love of her life, Gil, when he returned home from military service and they entered into marriage on Sept. 19, 1947; the couple had four children. They lived in Kief, Kongsberg, and Kenmare. In 1963, Gil and Lu purchased the Kenmare Clothing store. They owned and operated the store until 1983, when they sold the store to their son, Ron and daughter-in-law Laurie Rauschenberger.

Lu was a kind and loving woman who cared deeply about her family, faith and community. She was an active member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare, and a member of Lord Of Life Church, Bismarck, and was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Kenmare. She was a P.E.O. member of Chapter L, Kenmare and Chapter AA, Bismarck. She served on the P.E.O. State Board for seven years serving as president in 1981-1982. Lu formed a committee and with the cooperation of many they were able to restore the Kenmare Memorial Hall.

Lu enjoyed baking, canning, hardanger, and she loved spending long weekends at their cabin on Lake Metigoshe where the family and especially the grandchildren came ready to enjoy the lake. In 2006, Gil and Lu sold their home in Kenmare and moved to Bismarck. In March 2014, Lu moved to Fargo where she resided at Riverview Place.
