School supplies collected for area students

Kids from the area will go back to school with new school supplies this fall thanks to the annual Fill the Bus school supply drive.

Joanne Fredericksen, a volunteer, said people dropped off a variety of supplies paper, folders, pencils, crayons, glue, erasers, tape, boxes of tissue on Wednesday at the Town and Country Credit Union.

A school bus was set up in the parking lot of the credit union from morning until evening. Cars were still pulling up to drop off supplies until the very last minute.

Fredericksen said the school supply drive was sponsored by Sunrise Rotary Club, Town and Country Credit Union and The Salvation Army.

“We’ve been doing this for a number of years,” said Fredericksen .

Last year, she said, she thought about 180 school backpacks filled with school supplies were distributed to children in need.

The Salvation Army will distribute the supplies. Families that have a need can apply for the school supplies at the Salvation Army up until Aug. 18, said Fredericksen . People who want to drop off donations of school supplies but didn’t make the Fill the Bus drive on Tuesday can still drop off supplies at the Salvation Army Church, 315 Western Ave., Minot.
