Russel Torkelson

Russel Torkelson, 93, Kenmare, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014, in a Kenmare hospital.

Russel E. Torkelson was born Feb. 10, 1921, a son of Tilfred and Inga (Christianson) Torkelson, in Kenmare. He was raised and educated in Kenmare.

On July 30, 1942, Russel enlisted into the Army, serving with the medics. He proudly served his country until his honorable discharge on Jan. 12, 1945.

Russel was united in marriage to Ruth Erickson on June 16, 1946, at First Baptist Church in Kenmare. They made their home in Kenmare, where Russel worked as a carpenter.

Russel was a charter member of Faith Baptist Church of Kenmare, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, trustee and usher for many years. He made crosses of various sizes and shared them with church family, as well as people within the community. He was also active on the Kenmare School Board for nine years. He served as president during the building of the new school.

Russel is survived by: Wife of 68 years, Ruth, Kenmare; children, Janice Torkelson, Shoreview, Minn., Ron (Jan) Torkelson, Fargo, Sandy (Steve) Cech, Minot, and the Rev. Rick (Deb) Torkelson, Washburn; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Lisa (Ross) Wilhelm and their children Anna and Andrew of Fargo, Sara (Kevin) Wirkkala and their children Aubrie, Kylie and Madelyn, of Circle Pines, Minn., Jill (Sean) Todd, and their children Evan and Carson, of West Fargo, Amy (Brandon) Miller and their son Nathan, of Issaquah, Wash., Katie Torkelson, Grand Forks, Ryan (Kate) Cech and their daughters Katarina and Kristiana, of Alexandria, Va., Brooke (Jeff) Swartz and their children Chezney and Cruz, of Castle Rock, Colo.; and sister, Alta Johnson, Kenmare. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Russel was preceded in death by: his parents; brothers, Glenn and Roy; sisters, Lyda Nelson and Thelma Mayer.

Funeral Service: Saturday, Aug. 9, at 11 a.m., at Faith Baptist Church, Kenmare.

Graveside Service: Monday, Aug. 11, at 2 p.m., at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan.

Visitation: Today, Friday, from 3 to 6 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare.
