Suellen Johnston

March 7, 1941 – Aug. 15, 2014

BISMARCK Suellen Johnston, Bismarck, formerly Glenburn and Minot, was born March 7, 1941, in Hinsdale, Ill., to Arthur and Vivian (Underwood) O’Connell. Her first day in heaven was Friday, August 15, 2014, following a short illness. A funeral service will be held to celebrate her life at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 20, at Bismarck Baptist Church, 2211 LaForest Ave., Bismarck. Interment will take place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Bismarck Funeral Home and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Suellen was raised in Lansford and Glenburn. She graduated from Glenburn High School in 1959. She married Jack Johnston on July 1, 1962, at the Glenburn Baptist Church.

Suellen attended Minot State Teachers College, where she received her Teaching Standard. She taught elementary school in Washburn, Maxbass and Glenburn. After moving to Minot, she worked at the Minot Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat clinic for a short time before managing the Sears Portrait Studio for nearly 10 years. She loved getting to know her customers and creating cherished portraits for their families

Family provided her with her deepest joy. In 2010, she moved to Bismarck to be closer to her children and grandchildren, as well as two sisters. In 2013, health challenges brought another move to Edgewood Vista in Bismarck, where she made many new friends among the residents and staff. She reveled in all the small world connections she made there.

She is survived by her mother, Vivian O’Connell, Bismarck; daughter, Jill (Glen) Stevens, Fargo; son, Mark (Margaret) Johnston, New Salem; six grandchildren, Rachel, Luke, Anna, Adam, Joshua and Jacob; sisters Kathy (Mike) O’Keeffe, Bismarck, Colleen Sand, Pasco, Wash., Pat (Rick) Rasnick, Rockledge, Fla., Joni (Nick) Kleven, Pasco, Wash.; brothers, Dan (Avis) O’Connell, Palm Bay, Fla., Ken (Kathy) O’Connell, Branson, Mo., Jim (LaVonne) O’Connell, Goshen, Ind.; sister-in-law, Judy Lonning; children’s parents-in-law, Glen and Diane Stevens, Minot, Donald and Marna Held, Judson; many, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; father, Arthur O’Connell; parents-in-law, Andy and Alice Johnston; brothers-in-law, Randy Sand, Del Johnston and Edo Johnston; sisters-in-law, Ora Thompson and Opal Johnston; niece, Rebecca Wilson, and nephew, Scott Johnston.
