Lawrence “Larry” Nelson

April 15, 1946-Aug. 15, 2014

Lawrence “Larry” Nelson, 68, of Minot, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, in the Fargo VA Hospital. His memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 11 a.m., at American Lutheran Church in Stanley. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Stanley.

Larry was born April 15, 1946, to Morris and Lorraine (Schultz) Nelson in Minot, and was raised in Stanley where he attended grade school and high school. He graduated from Montana State University in 1968 with a degree in physics where he was elected into membership of the MU Epsilon Math Honorary Fraternity. When Larry was a junior at MSU he had the highest grade point average in the entire school with math and physics his favorite subjects.

Larry served in the U.S. Army for two and a half years from 1969 to 1971, spending 12 months in Vietnam as an electrical technician. He earned a medal for expert marksmanship. After being discharged Larry went back to graduate school at Montana State University in electrical engineering, followed by working for the Montana Power Company as a relay engineer. In 1975 he became an officer at the Scandia American Bank in Stanley, working there until 1986 when he became president of Liberty State Bank in Powers Lake.

Larry was married to Lynn Whiteside from Jan. 13, 1973, to 1990. They raised one son, Matthew, born in 1984. Larry married Yuqian (Christine) Jiao on Sept. 7, 1993, and they raised twins Jessica and Samuel, born in 1997. Larry was so proud of his children and grandchildren and loved them very much. Anytime his granddaughters Annabelle and Miley would walk into his room, his eyes would light up and he would have a big smile. His wife, children and grandchildren brought him great joy and happiness. Larry was so thankful that he was able to see his children grow up to become adults.

In his younger years Larry enjoyed hunting, camping in the mountains, and riding one of his several motorcycles. He also loved to read and spend time with family and friends. Larry was fluent in German and traveled to Germany after his junior year in college. While there he bought a motorcycle and visited several cities where he checked out the universities and visited with some professors.

Larry was a kind and gentle man, always willing to help a friend. He had a great sense of humor, loved to laugh, listen and carry on a good conversation. Unfortunately, soon after returning from Vietnam, Larry developed symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis which later was felt to be due to exposure to Agent Orange. He fought the disease for over 35 years with great courage, never losing his zest for life.

He is survived by his wife, Christine; daughter, Jessica; sons, Samuel and Matthew (Mary) all from Minot; grandchildren Annabelle and Miley, Minot; sisters, Marcia Jarrett and her husband, John, Eugene, Ore., and Jennifer Nelson, Lafayette, Colo.; brother, Bruce Nelson and his wife, Lois, Fargo; niece Jennifer Cornutt and her husband, J.D.; nephews, John M.
