Estella was born July 27, 1932, to George and Dagmar Larson, in Clearbrook, Minn. After high school, she attended Mayville State College and earned her teaching certificate. While working at Westside Lodge on Lake Metigoshe, she met her husband-to-be, Oliver Dunderland. They were married Aug. 25, 1956, in Clearbrook. They settled in Bottineau and raised two children, Paul and Julie.
Estella taught for three years in rural schools near Tioga and Souris before she was hired by the Bottineau School District. She returned to Mayville for summer school and took correspondence classes to complete her bachelor’s degree in education. She split her 31 years of teaching in Bottineau between first and third grades. In 1988 she retired from teaching and that same year was awarded the Bottineau Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award for her years of dedication to her students.
She was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Bottineau, and also attended Metigoshe Lutheran Church. She spent countless hours volunteering her time at these two churches as well as at Metigoshe Ministries and St. Andrews Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of an educational service organization called the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and was an active member of the Metigoshe Lions Club.
Estella enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking. Traveling to Canada for fishing, Montana for elk hunting, Florida for “shelling,” and motorcycling through the western U.S. with her husband, were among her favorite getaways. Mostly, she loved being home spending time with her husband, kids, grandkids, friends and relatives.
