Opal Johannes

Opal Johannes, 84, McGregor, formerly of Riverdale, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2014, in a Tioga nursing home.

Opal was born in Powers Lake Oct. 21, 1929, to Harold and Mabel (Olson) Post. She was baptized and confirmed at Grand View Lutheran Church near Columbus. She was once married to Clair Nickey and to this union, Nona and Nial were born. In 1960, Opal was united in marriage to Howard Johannes; they added to their family with his two daughters, Wanda and Nancy.

Opal and Howard lived in several places, including Lignite, Westhope, Keene, Tioga and Fairbanks, Alaska. They moved to Riverdale in 1986 after Howard retired. They both loved fishing and camping and spent many good times at McGregor Dam. After Howard passed away in 2010, Opal moved to McGregor to be closer to her brother. She moved to Tioga Long Term Care Center in May 2014.

Opal loved music. She sang and played the guitar and accordion when she was younger. She was a very talented woman; she loved to paint and sew. She made hundreds of beautiful quilts and donated many of them to hospice patients, even when she was ill herself.

Opal is survived by: her children, Nona Rardin (Alan) of Palisade, Minn., Nial Nickey, of McGregor, Minn., Wanda Sivertson (Wade) of Rock Springs, Wyo., and Nancy Swanson (Gary) of Wayzata, Minn.; grandchildren, Heather, Kerry, Jennifer, Hidie, Jonathan, Lance, Rachel, Chad, James and Gail; numerous great-grandchildren; brother, John Post (Donna) of McGregor; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; and brothers, LeVan Post and Monte Post.

Funeral: Saturday, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Riverdale.

Interment: Alexander Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Underwood.

Visitation: Saturday, one hour prior to the service, in the church.
